Home Advantage at the Olympic Games: 1988-2012

On Monday this week I wrote a post titled Overwhelmed. Back in 2010 I wrote about Home Ground, Home Advantage. A comment by Danielle Woodward on my Overwhelmed post sent me off a journey back to 1988. I thought I would look at all the host cities from Seoul to the present day and consider the impact on the host nation's performance in the Games immediately before, at the host venue and the following Olympics to look at patterns of performance. I did not go back to 1984 because of issues about boycott. I have used the excellent London 2012 Games web site as...

A Twelve Year Journey: Medal Winning at the Olympic Games

Just before the start of the London Olympics I wrote about medal predictions. The predictions came from The Herald Sun's Virtual Medal Predictor. Twenty-six days before the Games performance data suggested the following outcomes: Te final medal table published on the London 2012 web site after the final event on Day 16 of the Games was: It is interesting to note the trends leading up to London that underscore Great Britain's achievements in London (data from the London 2012 web site): Sydney 2000 Athens 2004 Beijing 2008

Medal Predictions 2012 Olympic Games

Medal Predictions: 2012 Olympic Games

In February the Australian Olympic Committee published its medal predictions for the London Olympic Games. The predictions were based on data from 2010. In March USA Today published its medal tracker for London. Its tracker projects the winners in each medal event for the 2012 London Olympics, based on an algorithm that monitors athletes' performances leading up to the Games. The table is update once a month. The April 2011 update is: The USA Today Tracker uses data from Infostrada Sports and points out that the Tracker "is a measure of best current performances rather than a reliable predictor of medal winners". Infostrada Sports has...

The top three nations on the overall medal tally are streets ahead of the rest with Russia 97 medals, USA 94 and China 93. Great Britain is fourth with 48 medals followed by Germany 47, France 45 and Japan 43. Australia is eighth...

Women’s Olympic Football Tournament 2016: Round 2 Group Games

Introduction Games in Round 2 of the Women's Olympic Football Tournament in Rio were completed on 6 August. The schedule of games can be found here. I am aggregating some of the data from the tournament in this Google Sheet. Secondary Data I am collecting data from the FIFA website. I am making the assumption that the data shared there provide a record of fact assured by FIFA. I am interested in: When goals are scored. Performance compared to FIFA ranking. The team that scores the first goal. The discipline of each team (cards received). Goals Scored Round 2 There were 18 goals scored in the six...

Women’s Olympic Football Tournament 2016: Round 1 Group Games

Introduction The Women's Olympic Football Tournament in Rio has started. Round 1 games were played on Wednesday 3 August. The schedule of games can be found here. I am aggregating some of the data from the tournament in this Google Sheet. It is my small contribution to conversations about sport data focussed on women's performance. Secondary Data I am collecting data from the FIFA website. I am making the assumption that the data shared there provide a record of fact assured by FIFA. I am interested in: When goals are scored. Performance compared to FIFA ranking. The team that scores the first goal. The discipline of...

Summer Olympic performance on medal table four years after hosting the Games

Earlier this week, UK Sport announced medal targets for the Rio Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games. The medal target ranges of 47-79 Olympic and 113-165 Paralympic medals show that the ambitious aspirational goal of becoming the first host nation to win more Olympic and Paralympic medals at the next Games post-hosting, set out at the beginning of the Rio investment cycle in December 2012, is within range. While the goal remains within the ranges, UK Sport’s analyses shows a historic best away Olympics is a more probable target. I have taken a look at the history of Olympic Medals one quadrennium...

Performance at Summer Olympics Four Years Before Hosting the Games

Introduction An article about the prospects for Japan's 2016 Summer Olympics team in The Japan Times sent me off looking at Olympic medal data. Simon Gleave is quoted extensively in the article. His observations include this: I think we are now seeing the effect, or the beginning effect of Tokyo 2020. We’re seeing with Japan what we often see with countries who are going to host the Games, which is the potential for a very good performance in the Games before the ones they host. I have gone through some data archives to explore four-year out patterns. My data can be found here. Four Years...
