Penalty Shoot Outs at the 2014 FIFA World Cup

Introduction

The 2014 World Cup Regulations stipulate that for the Knockout Phase:

If, after 90 minutes, a match ends in a draw, extra time of two periods of 15 minutes each will be played. If the score is level after extra time, penalty kicks will be taken to determine the winner in accordance with the procedure described in the Laws of the Game.

Penalty Shoot Outs

There have been four penalty shoot outs in the 2014 World Cup:
Match 49 Brazil v Chile

Outcome of Shoot Outs

• Three higher Elo Ratings teams won (Brazil, Netherlands, Argentina).
• One lower Elo Ratings team won (Costa Rica (v Greece)).
• Team that took the first penalty won two out of four shout outs (Brazil, Costa Rica (v Greece)).
• Team that scored the first penalty goal won three out of four shoot outs (Brazil, Costa Rica (v Greece), Argentina).
