Introduction
Melbourne Stars defeated the Melbourne Renegades in Game 19 of this season’s BBL (link). The Renegades batted first and scored 142 for 9. At one stage they were 117 for 3. There were 54,000 spectators at the MCG for this game.
The Stars batted second and scored 143 for 2 with a third wicket partnership between Marcus Stoinis and Glenn Maxwell of 68 runs. The Stars won by 8 wickets with 7 balls remaining.
This result reversed the outcome of the 2019 BBL Final (link).

It was interesting to see both teams’ performances in Game 19. Both teams had spoken about the dramatic events of 2019. The Renegades were 3 for 117 in game 19 and then lost six wickets for 25 runs in 5.3 overs. The Stars had two significant partnerships in their total of 143.
In the 2019 Final, the Stars were 99 for 3 after 14 overs and added a further 33 runs with the loss of 4 wickets in five overs. The Renegades batted first and scored 145 for 5. Their final partnership (between Tom Cooper and Dan Christian) scored 80 runs in 9.4 overs in front of a crowd of 40,000 spectators at the Marvel Stadium.
In Game 19, the Stars recognised the importance of partnerships and shot selection. it was fascinating to see what they had learned from 2019 and contrast it with the Renegades who are yet to win a BBL game in the 2019-2020 season.
