Super Netball 2018: Round 13 Lightning v Swifts

Delegates from the 14th Australasian Conference on Mathematics and Computers in Sport are off to the Sunshine Coast Lightning netball game today.
The Lightning are hosting the NSW Swifts in a Round 13 game in the Super Netball Tournament. Anthony Bedford will be the delegates’ guide and will share his work as the Lightning’s performance analysis lead in real-time.
My contribution to the day’s activities from a long way away in rural NSW was to share some data on GitHub.
My median profile of both teams is:
Lightning

NSW Swifts

My data suggest a close game with a win for the Lightning, but I am mindful of this observation in the context of a KDnuggets’ description of predicting outcomes in sport:

Data science has limited accuracy when dealing with predicting group behaviour. … It’s abundantly clear that these predictions are more for entertainment purposes, or to give a rough estimate, rather than an exact science.

As well as using median data to guide my observation of games, I have a particular interest in the thick description that comes from a phenomenographic account of performance that suggests temporal patterns of stable behaviour.
I am looking forward to today’s game and the insights delegates will share. In a subsequent post I will reflect on my analysis of this game.
