  1. So what’s happened over the past 4 years that there’s such a gulf between Great Britian and Australia? The Silver totals are the same 11 each and the Bronze totals are pretty close at 11/8.

    • A home Olympics! We have been admiring for some time the focus on excellence in the UK.
I thought Sydney 2000 was a high water mark for Australia, Gordon.
I do think that countries that have followed an ethical Institute model have overtaken Australia.

  2. Yes, the AIS seems to have set the model for others to follow so I guess Australia is paying the price of being first in the field. Also almost all elite sport here is Lottery funded so all the time we buy lottery tickets we keep the money flowing.
Home advantage has clearly worked in some of the contests (rowing comes to mind) but its also claimed a few casualities with swimmers like Becky Adlington feeling she had to appologise of only getting Bronze and Zac Purchase for ‘only’ getting Silver.
I know to read the Guardian but had you picked up the frustration of the French? They see themselves as the cycling nation and the Tour de France went to Bradley Wiggins and now we’re beating them in the velodrome – they think we have ‘magic’ wheels!

I think that sport can flourish if we share. Perhaps one indicator of success might be the impact a sport system can have on global change. I think a good example is the connection between England and Australia late in 1990s and early 2000s in cricket.
It might also transform the discussions about the ownership of sport. Perhaps ownership is a collective responsibility and that at various times some countries are the custodians of a sport.
From afar I thought Becky would have difficulty meeting her Beijing standards. I thought the swimming program was under enormous pressure to succeed given the level of investment made.
      Best wishes
      Keith
